For the month of December 2002 we were on high alert that baby Viktor could make his way into the world at any time. I visited my doctor weekly, and was reassured every week that this baby was coming soon. Roland was ready to fly out the door at work every time he heard my voice on the phone. Wolfy seemed to get more stressed about it the longer we waited. By my due date, Dec. 22, we were all beyond tired of waiting!
After what seemed like forever, and 7 hours after being induced, Viktor Nathaniel Christian Schwarz was finally born at 3 PM on December 30, 2002. He weighed 9 lbs. 7 oz. and was 21 inches long. At birth he looked like a blond clone of Wolfy at that age. He was and is adorable.
My parents watched Wolfy and brought him by that evening to meet his new brother. My parents joked that they now knew where the baby clone (of Wolfy) was. Wolfy wasn't so fond of this new person in our lives. He looked, but did not want to get too close to him at first. Wolfy did sit next to me while I held Viktor on my hospital bed. The bed going up and down was so exciting toWolfy he talked about it for a week, so this getting a new brother experience wasn't all bad.
Viktor has had some
minor medical traumas already, well at least they were traumatic
for me. A nurse at the hospital heard him make a sound which she
didn't like, so the doctor ordered a chest x-ray and blood tests.
Everything came back normal. He lost 3 oz. and had jaundice, so
we had to go in daily to have him weighed and heel prick tests
done to see what his level was until the doctor was satisfied.
Viktor went through photo-therapy treatment, and that's all now
a distant memory.
